An Upcoming Study of Potential Success Factors for an Introductory Model-Driven Programming Course
نویسندگان
چکیده
In order to improve the course design of an objects-first CS1 programming course we will study potential indicators of success for such a course. The general interest for success factors for a programming course has been toward more knowledge-oriented factors like math score and previous programming experience. Unfortunately, improving these factors is out of our control. We therefore increase the factors to include the more general factors of motivation and power of abstraction as well as the “soft” elements of emotional health and social well-being — factors which to a certain extent is improvable within the introductory programming course. In this paper, we explain and discuss the design of the research, including our understanding of the factors under study. Because of the variety of interpretations of “objects-first”, the present research is necessary as a supplement to earlier research in order to make generalizable results on the success factors for objects-first programming.

A Study of Factors Promoting Success in Computer Science Including Gender Differences
This study was conducted to determine factors that promote success in an introductory college computer science course and to determine what, if any, differences appear between genders on those factors. The model included math background, attribution for success/failure, self-ef®cacy, encouragement, comfort level in the course, work style preference, previous programming experience, previous non...
متن کاملFactors Affecting Course Outcomes in Introductory Programming
Learning to program is difficult for many students. Although several factors that affect learning to program have been identified over the years, we are still far from a full understanding of why some students learn to program easily and quickly while others flounder. Two constructs that may affect learning to program are self-efficacy and mental models. Self-efficacy is the individual’s judgme...

متن کاملOptimists Have More Fun, But Do They Learn Better? – On the Influence of Emotional and Social Factors on Learning CS and Math
Learning to program is notoriously difficult. In order to understand predictors of success and, when possible, improve the course design of the introductory pprogramming course to increase the likelyhood of success, we study a number of factors that potentially indicate programming aptitude. We have studied the influence of emotional and social factors on students’ learning outcome. Emotional h...
متن کاملDevelopment of an Improved Fuzzy Approach to Model Potential Sites for Groundwater Artificial Recharge
Delineation of potential sites for groundwater artificial recharge is an important and challenging task. The purpose of this research is to develop a new data-driven fuzzy approach to model potential sites for groundwater artificial recharge. To achieve this end, the efficient criteria of a proper site for groundwater artificial recharge were first recognized and presented as a conceptual model...
